Montreal-based artist Anthony Burnham engages with the construction of images in a world where these have gained unprecedented power, affecting every aspect of contemporary life. In response, his studio practice develops a conversation between various media (sculpture, photography and painting), aimed at critically investigating the life and agency of images. Burnham thus builds a space for images that is neither a simulacra or a spectacle but one that allows an embodied and sustained response from the viewer.

Anthony Burnham holds a BFA from Concordia University. Over the past years he has exhibited his work in Canada, Spain, Austria, and France. He took part in the Québec Triennial, Nothing Is Lost, Nothing Is Created, Everything Is Transformed (Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, 2008). In 2011, his project Even Space Does Not Repeatcirculated between The Walter Phillips Gallery (Banff) and Carleton University Art Gallery (Ottawa). His work was included in the Painting Project/Projet Peinture at Galerie de l’UQÀM (2013). He is represented by Galerie RenéBlouin in Montreal.

Monika Žáková creates miscellaneous configurations by assembling and superimposing various elements based on an additive approach, confronting herself with its limitations. She employs a projection of logic, approaching it from the position of internal relations and perception of systematic character as well as that of a transcendental experience of harmony and equality. Žáková‘s sophisticated analytical work is characterized by manic precision and motivated by a curiosity embracing visibility, illusion and craftsmanship. She puts an emphasis on the importance of the interconnection between the contentual and formal aspect of the work. She keeps revisiting the question of the surface. She deals with the properties of the used material (texture, rawness of paper) which keeps pushing its way to the surface through an imprint of a masking tape or a scratch of a knife blade, stimulating a sensory and emotional experience of the painting. The paintings also have a very demanding chromatic character.
